Just another follow up if any of you are following this. In early January, I finally got them to send me a mailing label and returned the faulty disk. They told me I would have a replacement delivered in about two weeks. I contacted them today and was told that they never received the returned SSD according to their tracking and gave me the tracking number to check on my end.

But guess what? That was not the tracking number on the label that they sent me. According to the correct tracking number, they received it on the 11th of last month. When I gave the correct number he checked it and said they would send it out in the next 48 hours. I've always liked Sandisk products but their customer service is clearly screwed up. I'm open to other alternatives for external media . . .

For SSD's, I prefer Samsung. For camera media, I still use SanDisk. If you have a recommended alternative, please share if you can.

I’ve been using a Sandisk SSD on my M1 Macbook pro, no problems. I keep all my photo files on it.

Thanks, Walter! I must be lucky, then, because I have not experienced any issues with any of my SanDisk Extreme Portable or Extreme Pro Portable drives that I have purchased and used over the past couple of years. Just got a new one not that long ago, too.... I think one reason may be that the first thing I do with a new one is to format the drive (in my case, to APFS) even though the drive may have arrived right out of the box formatted to APFS.....the new formatting gets rid of any proprietary stuff on the drive, and since I don't need that anyway, best to just start with a clean new drive.

I just chatted with tech support. The three 4TB disks I have are not affected ("wipes brow"). They also confirmed that they are currently replacing affected disks. A firmware update is still forthcoming, but for now they can check your serial number to see if it is affected.
