Spotted in Regents Park yesterday while I was looking for insects. I went back this morning and it had shrivelled up completely so I was very lucky to spot it when I did

Wow, that is tiny. Great capture, you must crawl on your hands and knees to find this stuff. Either that, or you have hawk eyes!

Thank you. Actually it was pretty much at eye level in a knot hole on the trunk of a young Oak tree. At this time of the year I tend to spend my free time looking very closely at tree trunks for insects as it's the only place to find them until the Spring!

Excellent find! I can't get over how small it is compared to the coin.

Did you get any funny looks lying down on the ground in the middle of a public park?

That is indeed small, but as we know, mushrooms are very variable in size depending on the conditions and substrate. I am sure this species does not always come in such tiny sizes.

As for the ID - I wish Leif could chime in as he is a better mycologist than I am. All I can say is that it is either a Mycena, or Marasmius, or Marasmiellus.

Cheers

Thanks everyone. I have passed that tree several times in the last few weeks and still have to look hard to even spot the knothole. The lighting must have been just right for me to spot it that day.
Sometimes I worry if looking so hard at tiny objects for hours on end is damaging my eyesight :Swirl:

These photos you took are astounding. Your depth of field is awsome. What exactly did you use to capture these superb shots? Did you have to crop your photo's? I have tried a few macro shots and thought a couple were not bad but looking at yours, mine rate about a solid 10 on the suckey scale

Thank you olshroom!

Settings were as follows - D300, 60mm AF-S, SB-400, 1/250, f16, ISO200, Spot metering, AutoWB. I always choose to crop to some degree.

I think it's a case of the more you shoot the luckier you get and having lost my job just before Christmas I have plenty of time to practise at the moment
