Based on your experience, what do you find as a comfortable max ISO that shall be used in D7100 without much noise? I feel comfortable to use till around 2000. But, huge amount of noise appear when try to lighten any dark areas during PP.

My vote was above 2000. I am not sure what you are doing in PP, there are so many ways to deal with noise, but I have no issue to 3200 at all.

Can you describe the PP you do that results in so much noise, post an example or two?

If you get the exposure right in camera...clean ISO5000 shouldn't be a problem.
My D7K handles that all night long, and the D7100 afforded much the same IQ
while I had it. I shoot stuff that moves in crappy light..so YM(and tolerance)MV

I've always found the noise kind of ugly on the D7100 compared to my old CCD sensored D50. It doesn't seem to clean up as nice. And using in camera NR blurs the image too much for my taste. I suppose I should try other noise tools since this may be a limitation specific to this camera.

I am surprised how well my D7100 works at high ISO (above 2000) in darker situations---big BIG jump in performance in this area over earlier camera bodies. At this time, I am using two older f2.8 zooms (20-35 and 35-70) and the newest 70-200 f2.8 VR2---happy with them---now thinking about the new 80-400 AF-S VR lens...

Lift shadows or bump ev ?

Noise hides in shadows
Expose to the right of center on the histogram
It's better to slightly overexposed than under but just right is best

I do and that's where I'm disappointed, I suppose I should have gotten the D600.

What techniques do you use to remove noise? The best I have found is the Dr. Jay method within NX2, the most important thing about it is to be sure you do your NR befor you do anything else, especially any sharpening.

PM me if you want more specifics, it is really pretty amazing what can be done. Or better yet, we could trade a NEF or two for comparison.

By the way, the D600 is pretty darned amazing, but if you want crazy, go the D800 route , or for just a "few dollars more" .......

Expose well and ISO 3200 is usable if you need it. But if I needed to shoot at that level all the time, I'd be looking at a D800 instead. People are too obsessed with high ISO in my opinion...
