First post here on nikoncafe. I've had my D300 for a while now but I picked up some new things in this thread. Looking forward to learning some more! :)

If i'm not mistaken on D70 there was a way to shoot in a new folder if you press some button when turning on the camera... Is there something similar on the D300/s? I should probably be digging the manual, but it's at home....

I have dragged the menu for creating a new folder on the card into "my menu" as I also could not find the short cut.

I would be pleased, to hear, there is a shortcut to do by buttons rather than menu.

Just scanned the D70 manual and there is nothing there about folder selection other than through the normal menu option.

I knew, I had read something, some time ago about the folder creation by key shortcut:

Ken Rockwell: "6.) Bring back the pro trick that holding the "Key/?" button as you turn on the power creates a new folder and saves the new images you make to it. This is extremely handy in cameras that have it because when you load the images into your computer they already will be sorted into folders. I find this extremely helpful, and much faster than creating new folders in the menus."

The link to the site is here:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d700.htm

It is a D700 writeup with a suggestion, to bring this nice feature back to the new cameras.

I don't have my Nikon DSLR at hand now, but it is worth a try, which bodies can still pull this trick. I suppose at least the D3 can - this would explain, why I ended up once with several folders on the cards by accident.

I will have a try at the D3 and D300 later.

I have this great Office Excel document with all pertinent settings for the D300 on file I would like to share with ya'll. But I do not know how to upload it to the site.
It includes:
Pre-shoot set up
Playback menu
Shooting menu
Custom setup menu
Setup Menu
Retouch Menu
All located in Tab files on the bottom of the spread sheets.
It more of less covers all essential variables, defaults, and specific setting the user should use for Portraits, Sports, Landscapes.
I have had for a while now and used it to set up my camera when I purchased it. Its very easy to use and you have very little adjustment to do afterwords unless there are specific changes required do to the image at hand, such as metering.
Its currently in a zipped file. I thought about emails, but I could be overrun with request so any ideas on how to load it to a thread would be great. I need a "Manage Attachments" option when I create a new thread and there are none here.

I think it may have been posted in this thread as a link unless it is something you have done yourself

Actually, I got it from that Nikon sight thats wants your money before you can even access it. I forget the name. The file is at least a year old, so it may be the same one.
Thanks

yep. that's the one. I belonged to that site till they wanted to charge. The interface is terrible IMO. Not sure if it is on here or how you would post it. I do know that my Mac was able to open it

Firmware update for D300?

Could someone tell me if it is easy to update the firmware for my D300 by myself? Where do I go for the upload? Do I need anything special to load into the camera?
My local camera store offers to do it for me for $25.00.
Thanks

It's very simple, instructions are on the Nikon website where you download the files.

All you need is a CF card.

I don't know if someone already said it, as I don't have the time to read the entire thread, but I found out recently, with my GF's D300s, that when shooting in 14-bit RAW mode, your Continuous High doesn't work. only shoots 3 FPS...

I thought it was broken. Turns out, it was just that setting i changed from 12-bit to 14-bit.
