Thats a big call. I recall you saying that DX was dead to you when you first got the D800

I sure did say that and honestly thought I wouldn't keep the d7100 before I ordered it but when I ordered the 80-400 I said what the heck

Both have really surprised me a lot, but I may not shoot dx for sports much because of dof.....I'm addicted to fx dof to erase those nasty high school stadium backgrounds

For distant wildlife you have a good point - it's all about the pixel density...

But in general, I wouldn't trade the D800 for a D7100. I like to photograph landscapes & people, too - and the 36 MP resolution has corrupted me

The other problem is that I don't want to carry 2 SLR bodies, so I'd always have to make a call between D800 & D7100 before a trip. With my current setup I can simply throw the V1 in the bag when I take the D800 on a big trip - the V1 won't even register for its extra weight

Cheers

Mike

I wouldn't either (trade a d800 for a d7100).....after all there's a pretty good dx body inside that d800 but I know it's not fact based but I still think a dx crop retains more detail than a crop of an fx pic, of course the D7100's MP are the reason but even back in the D3/D300 days I liked a D300 in body cropped pic over a cropped d3 pic in pp.....if that makes any sense....of course the d3 had a lot of advantages over a d300

Anyway I'm set for a few weeks:smile: anyway
D4 for sports
D7100 for wildlife

Nice rant  Hmm - that "cheers garbage"? Seems like a proper greeting form around here where I work. Mostly used by folks of European origin like me
...yada-yada-yada

Cheers

Mike

Hey, wait a minute. I see Santa Barbar CA up there, Dude, shouldn't you be over the "Cheers" stuff by now??????

Yeah, a good rant is good for the soul now and again, ain't it? By the way, go back far enough and I think I'm of "European Origin" as well .....:eek:

As to the speed differential, here is a link to the SD Card Spec where it shows how much simpler the interface is than CF, and that as noted above it is a serial interface. If you examine the charts on the Galbraith site, you will also note the same speed difference in cameras other than Nikon, so unless Nikon influenced Canon, I don't think you can blame this one on Nikon. What may occur, however, is that the D7100 has actually implemented the newer variant of UHS-1, or maybe it now is UHS-II, I'm too lazy to keep up. Bottom line is that between Nikon, SanDisk and the rest of the industry, the "next new thing out" will have something "better" than that old one of 2 months ago.

As to which camera to use for what, I agree with you that the D7100 will not replace my D800, in fact it won't replace my V1 either, I think all three complement each other. The D7100 did, however, replace my D600. What seems a bit bizarre even to me is that as Randy, the D7100 will become my main "way over there little birdy" camera, with the D800+80-400 AFS VR as my hand-held secondary. The V1 for video and the occasional WAY THE HECK over there shot with the adapter. It is pretty funny to put the V1 on my 400 f2.8+TC-20E III. If my math is correct: 2.7*400*2 = 2160mm f5.6, gnats eyebrow time  I actually tried BIF with the V1 and adapter just for grins, and it was a bit of a disaster. While the AF is darned good, it wasn't good enough for a flying Short-eared Owl.

And what kind of wimp is worried about carrying around 2 DSLR's? C'mon, I'm a 63 yr old grump, if I can do it ANYBODY can. ( no wise-A remarks, Randy .... )

Randy, in the main I agree. Remember that in DX crop the D800 is yielding just under 16MP in the same area as the D7100. I think that is one reason. The other, that I have noticed for myself, is just the difference in size of the target FX vs. DX. I think that when the target is small, DX has the edge in AF. I like to think of these as "differences" rather than one being better or worse.

Dang, I'm agreeing with too many people tonight, have to go find somebody to disagree with .......

i had no idea you were that young (did that qualify)

try a d4 + 400vr on a gitzo monopod w/ an rrs mh-01 head in 1 hand and a d7100 + 70-200 on a BR strap on your other shoulder:eek:

that extra 8mp is why i gave the d7100 a try, but the little camera that could surprised me and it did.....anyway as soon as that d400 comes out the d7100 is outta here, i can hardly wait:smile: but in the meantime I'll be shooting and cropping, shooting and cropping.......

OK, binkie. Try a D800 with grip, 400 f2.8 AFS-1 (no vr, the 11 lb model ) on a Gitzo 3 series with a Jobu Pro Gimbal head over one shoulder. A D600 + 200-400 AFS VR f4 on a BR strap on the other shoulder, walking out in a danged salt marsh to photograph stupid owls who won't come closer :eek:

My Snowy Owls from last year were with the same lens combo's, just 2 D300's. Yes, I was tired. The D7100 + 80-400 AFS VR combo is ever so much lighter and more convenient

that is impressive, especially considering your age:biggrin:

geez, now it's like a vacation, the d7100 + 80-400 doesn't even way what the 200-400 alone does
