Is D7100 a worthy upgrade over D7000?

I've owned a D7K at one point and I found it to be a really good backup/second camera. I'm looking to get a small DX body and saw the D7100, but what exactly am I getting with this compared to the D7000? To those who upgraded from D7K to D7100, what are the real life improvements that you noticed?

I can get a used D7000 for around $600 vs. about $950 for a used D7100. Is the additional $350 worth spending on a 7100?

Well you signature says you have a D4. so I would point out the AF is MUCH closer to that of the D4 than the D7000 was. That's probably the single biggest feature I would notice.

I made the jump - the AF is better, the resolution is better and if nothing else the button on the top dial that keeps it from rotating every time you take the camera out of the bag is worth the $$.

I agree with the guys above: Better AF, Better LCD, Cool blue led color in the VF
The dial lock is a God sent, a bit lighter (weight) than the D7000.
In case you're into it, movie mode is way better as well.
All in all I'm more comfortable with it than with my D7000.

I still have both. The D7000 was/is a great mid level camera. The D7100 has a few things that just make it a better camera for a shooter. The fact that you can reassign the FN button to focus on made it very easy for my run/gun 2 setting. If you do video (which I do) 720 60 fps is great for slow motion. Being able to do the 1.3 crop with the 51 points has been good for fast moving stuff. The faster transfer with the 95md and 12 bit files mean I can get by with it for fast moving stuff. The back screen is better in bright sun. The head phone and sound control made recording video much easier. Better bracketing and HDR in camera can be useful.

If I had a very tight budget I'd buy a refurb D7000 for around $650 or a low count use one that I've seen as low as $550. If I had more budget I'd go for a D7100. Both cameras should last someone a long time as they are very capable imaging platforms.

Ask Randy and Will and be totally confused.

I returned my d7k because of AF problems.....it might have been me, who knows.

I thought the d7100 was better then it has turned out to be, AF wise.
It's very good for wildlife but it has some issues for sports, nothing I can't live with......

IMO the D300 blows them both away in the AF dept but the d7100 kills the D300 at high ISO, d300 gets in trouble at 800, the D7100 is good to 3200

Bottom line is IQ from the D7100 (in reasonably good and even light) is superb. 24mp DX leaves a lot to be cropped. For the price it's a def winner. It's my go to body for wildlife, over the d800 and D4

ok thanks!

IIRC, TM had one but quietly sold it and stuck with his D7K. Randy raved about it for awhile but I read one of the threads where he had to send it to Nikon. So I dunno.. still can't decide.

It came back from Nikon with the msg: it is what it is
Almost no one is going to ask it to do what I did.....I wanted it to AF like a D4 for heavy duty soccer action.....for BIF it is amazing.....I'm on my way to shoot eagles and I brought the d7100

Get one, they produce super IQ at a relatively cheap price.....keyword is relatively

I've never tried a D7100, but I recently traded one of my D700 bodies for a D7000 and cash. I've only taken about 300 shots with the "new" D7000, but I've yet to take a bad photo. Well, at least they've all been in focus and the white balance hasn't been fooled...yet. I thought about a D7100, but just couldn't justify the extra expense for a walkaround camera. Since I'm now able to fine tune my Sigma 30 1.4, I've lost interest in buying a 35 1.4...at least temporarily.

For my purposes, it's everything I need. Your needs might be a bit different.

If I don't end up with a FX body that has the 51 pt AF I will wait for the D7300... still probably going to end up with a V3 strictly for macro.

Thank you all for the comments. Just placed an order for a D7100, but for now I'll just have to settle for the D4 while I wait for this thing
