New Update on D400, Not Good News

It may be that Nikon will wait until closer to when Canon announces the 7D upgrade. I don't understand this thinking, but it has been mentioned a number of times. I guess the advantage is that you could squeeze even newer technology in, but I would think that you would need more lead time for that.

If it looks like it might be delayed too long, I may end up with another D7100 instead. Who knows, maybe we will have a D7110s but then with a bigger buffer

I have all but given up on a D400. I have a nice bonus comming to me in October and was going to use it for an upgrade to my D300. Instead the wife and I are going on a long over due vacation (without kids) to go diving in the Turks and Caicos. Ill wait until the begining of the year to decide on what to do for a new camera.

What do D300 owners dislike about the D7100? I know it lacks the AF-ON button, which I have to admit, I'm spoiled with now that I have it.

But I just don't see why it's not acceptable to most. What does it lack?

Buffer depth.

Mike

You again ...., just learn to let go of the danged shutter button now and then, simple solution ....

Actually, I agree, and I would not mind getting my 2FPS back again, in "full" DX mode.

That being said, if the D400 comes out with bigger buffer and more FPS, I will get one, and won't get rid of my D7100. It is great value for the $$$ in my opinion.

I'm trying, Bill... But when that once-in-a-lifetime bird comes flying by I just seem to have too much weight in my shutter finger - can't seem to lift it within 3-4 seconds

Luckily for me, my D800 will give me 6 fps for almost 5 secs in DX crop mode, so I'm ok

Won't the D7100 give you about 2 fps at full resolution with the fastest cards? A 14-bit lossless compressed NEF should be about 30 MB, right? And the fastest SD cards (SanDisk Extreme Pro 95, I believe) can write at almost 60 MB/s in the D7100...

Yeah, that D400 is sorely missed :frown:

The D7100 might have a few faults, but you know, on my trip to Texas, when it was cloudy, I would of never been able to get images like this with my D300s. Taken at iso 1250, shutter speed 1/1250. Processing these files are a pure joy!

You bird-boys must be shooting raw---my D7100 shooting the highest Jpegs doesn't suffer the buffer problem at all---6 FPS, 7 FPS with 1.3 crop works well for me---no problem with frames remaining as I just shoot with 16 and 32 cards on board, plenty of space---no AF-on button? Never used it---less buttons? For what...

Oh, and I still have my D300 as a back-up body...

Heck, even with the 8fps of the D300 I would often miss the darned things. Nikon needs to invent a better camera. One where the image is always caught at EXACTLY the right time, yeah, I'd buy me one of those, fer sure!

D7100 in 1.3 mode yields about 7fps, at 15.4mps, so it actually does help in that case.

I'm starting to think the same thing; no D300s replacement. I had waited and waited to upgrade my D200. Finally, over a year ago I bought a D800. Now, still no D400 so I guess I made the right decision.

Oh, I don't know. I have one of each, D800 and D7100, they make a great combo, nicely compliment each other, and this way they don't get lonely

If Nikon had their way, there probably wouldn't be a D400, but since their whole marketing strategy is dependent on what their main competitor does, there has to be a D400 unless of course Canon decides not to update their 7D offering.
The only way there won't be a pro level D400 is if the 2 companies collude not to compete in that particular market segment.

I think I would reduce the frame rate to 5 fps if I had a D7100, so that I could shoot at least 2 secs before the silly buffer fills... At 7 fps, you've got exactly 1 second of 14-bit lossless before it slows - that would never work for me!

I think someone said that at 5 fps in 1.3 crop with 12-bit lossy, you can actually get 25 frames before the buffer fills - that sounds much better...
