D7200 advantages over an FX camera in DX mode?

So I'm in a quandary or as my wife likes to say "need to buy something syndrome".
I'm intrigued by all the good reviews on the D7200.
My question is: what benefit would the D7200 give me over the D810 in DX mode?
If there is little to no benefit then perhaps I can demonstrate to my wife that I have matured by tempering my
impulses to by something "new and shiny" :)

Separate body. At many places like Yellowstone I want a DX body on a wildlife lens and an FX body on a LS lens.

In full DX format, the D810 is 4800 x 3200 pixels. The D7100 is 6000 x 4000, which is a bit more resolution, useful for cropping. Having neither a D810 nor a D7200, I can't comment further on the technical differences.

The D7200 is a good deal smaller and lighter, however, and that is important to me.

The small size when I take the grip off is very nice as is the build quality. I know longer want a brick like D300 body. Plastic is fine, especially at 1199

What Randy and Jim said plus, for me, it is a visualization issue: what I see in the viewfinder. I have a D750 and a D7100. With the D750, if in crop mode I find it hard to track/frame the image I want. If I do not use crop mode, I find it hard to visualize what the image will look like when cropped later. YMMV, of course.

Thanks Jim . Difference in resolution is good to keep in mind.

Weighing the choice of a D750 and D7200 myself. A big factor is $$$ especially when it comes to the D810. The difference would buy some very nice lenses.
The D7200 will make better use of super zooms, the D7200 shoots 1 frame per second faster than the D810. The D7200 is smaller, a lot smaller and lighter. IMO it comes down to what type of photography you do. If it's primarily land and street scrapes then it's a FF body hands down, if it's animals and such then it gets harder. If you can shoot closer then FX if you are long distances the DX. The way I think I'm going Is to buy the D7200 and add all FX quality lenses, then down the road probably add a FX body. Either way awesome cameras.

Dis. Unless you get an über-MP camera like the D810, you're tossing a LOT of pixels out the window. I thought I had forsaken DX when I jumped to FX, but FX in DX mode left me with an anemic 10mp to work with. You really can't crop 10mp images much without pixelating. So I stepped back to a DX with a D7100.

I already have the D810. My personal quandry is should I get a D7200 as a second body or rely on the DX mode on the D810

If your D810 goes down for any reason then DX mode on the D810 will not help you :) Its one thing that a 2nd body can provide for which there is no alternative.

Depends on what you need a second body for. I sometime tote two FX bodies simply to make changing lenses a non-issue. Or I'll carry an FX for wide- to short-tele shots, and the DX for the long lens.

Many pro photographers have their assistant drive in a separate car to an event, just to preclude the unexpected. I always bring two bodies to an event if I am counting on getting pictures.
Even if you are not getting paid, if you absolutely, positively want to get the shot with something better than a smartphone, you need a second body.
The D7200 won't disappoint.
Fast, accurate AF, clean, detailed files, nice uncompromised reach, not overpriced or too heavy or bulky to carry in your bag.
Mines goes everywhere with my D750.

Bob - I feel that if you already have a D810, there is no reason to go out and spend money on a D7200. Most of the rationalizations provided here would be something to consider if you were deciding between one or the other. You are not. You would be far better off spending the money on new glass (the new 200-500 comes to mind) or using the money for travel where you can make great photographs with your great camera.

While the D7200 may offer some advantages in some circumstances, I can't see that it offers $1300.00 worth over what you have in your hand right now. JMHO.
