AF-On without a doubt.

However, there are some folks, a good friend of mine and my wife to note 2, who do not find this comfortable. The button is not "convenient" to their hand, so it does not work well for them. While I like this a lot, and recommend it, it is not a "must do".

For those who have not downloaded and read the D3 Tech Guide in the second link, do yourself a favor. Download it and read it. It has one of the best descriptions I have seen of the various modes, including the Lock On option, which to me is very important to understand.

WOW!

Thanks for that link. I've never heard of the AF-On method before. I just tested it out on my D70s and it seems to function perfectly. This will solve a few issues I've had to deal with previously using auto focus where I sometimes auto focus the subject then switch to manual so it stays at that focus setting while I shoot a few racers coming through a section. Refocusing quickly is always a hassle. This allows me to have both features available in an instant right at my thumb.

Thanks!!

I have been using the back button focus for a long time now and I would feel very uncomfortable doing it any other way .... it is a great way to set up your camera !!!
