I pulled the trigger on a D7100 today

Weary of waiting for Nikon to update the D300 and resistant to Nikon's obvious push to get us into more expensive FX cameras, I ordered a refurbished D7100 from Cameta today to fill the gap until Nikon releases something equivalent or better than the new Canon 7D.

I still use a D300, but I've added a D7100 to the mix. It took a long time to get used to the D7100. I don't love it, but it'll do until something better comes along.

Have been using the D7100 as a replacement for my old D200 and love it. It really outperforms the D200 in almost every aspect but I do miss a dedicated AF-ON button and the AF-EL button is not placed very well as a nice replacement. It has its quirks but they are manageable and don't take away any of the quality of the shots I get.

I just grabbed one yesterday after selling off my Fuji X-T1. The Fuji was a decent little camera, but I prefer a DSLR in the end. The D7100 is only slightly larger overall with the 35 f1.8 attached and fits in the same bag, so it'll be my new small camera for hauling places. My main is a D3, so it's nice to also have a second body that shares the same lenses again. Plus the high resolution compliments the D3's lower resolution for times when I need it.

I did the same thing. Saw a great deal on one from Amazon, so I got it. It's not a d300 replacement, but it's not a bad camera. It reminds me a great deal of the d70. I'll still use the d300 at times, I think, but the d7100 will work for me until a real d300 replacement comes along, if one ever does.

Hope that it works out okay for you.

Congrats

The d7100's image quality is superb.

Try to get SanDisk 95mb/s sd cards to flush the small buffer faster.
Try afc d9 to improve AF

I'm still on the fence. I have a D7000 and am very ambivalent about upgrading vs. waiting for the D400720093000. The refurb deals have tempted me, I must say. I print 16x24 and the D7K is satisfactory, but...

What Randy said.

If you can afford to go fx, get a d750. You won't be disappointed at all.

Thanks, Randy and datawiz. The dilemma about FX, of course, is the lens inventory. For me it's about $900 (refurb 7100) or $1600 ?? for a new D47293 vs $4-5000 when you take into account buying quality lenses, especially wide angle. My DX kit is pretty good (except for wide angle), including some FX lenses, but that's a pretty tall barrier for me. And I'm still not sure whether FX would offer a 300% additional benefit in IQ over a pro(sumer) DX.

2 issues with the 750, no afon button (I don't care because I don't use it) and another junk buffer (I hear anyway)
killer high iso though (I hear)

one of the workshop attendess ft weekedn at Ray's flight workshop stood nex to me and the d4 machine gun

a couple of things, all IMO of course

you don't need high dollar lenses to get good IQ from FX and even DX lenses work on FX but it's not ideal because you put the fx body into crop mode so it's kind of pointless unless you need high iso

and there is not a noticeable IQ improvement over DX when the DX body is the D7100. The ISO ceiling goes way up and wide is wide (14mm is 14mm, not 21mm)

so unless you need iso > 3200 or a bigger buffer (although I suspect the D750 is no better than the D7100 in FPS and buffer capacity)

long story but the D7100 will blow your mind

Ron, Congrats. I think you will find it "adequate" in the interim, just don't hold the shutter button down too long

Kerry, simply amazing! Now that both of you have done this, the D400 can't be far behind!!!! ;)

It's a little better - D750 buffer can fit 15 14-bit 24 MP NEFs, D7100 only 6. So it's a 2 sec buffer vs 1 sec - a 100% improvement :)

Still no comparison to the 5 sec buffer of the D800 or 6 sec buffer of the D810.

I hope you're right about that, Bill. It would be really nice to see them finally do a d300 replacement, especially if they made it an awesome release. While the d7k and d7100 are nice, I'm a little underwhelmed. I'm too spoiled by the pro features in the d300 and don't really want to do without them.

Kerry, all we can do at this point is hope a pray. I am keeping all my appendages, appropriate or otherwise, crossed. The only thing I won't do is to hold my breath. I can take the cramping from appendage crossing, but the breath-holding could have dire consequences I fear ;)

One thing I had forgotten about, which is a small help and workaround for some of the D7100 buffer issues, is to shoot in 1.3 crop, yielding an effect 15.4mp, therefore fitting more in the buffer. Consider the buffer will hold about 5-6 full size images, you can squeeze a couple more with the 1.3 crop, as well as squeeze another 1 fps. Not ideal in any way, by any stretch of the imagination, but it can help at times.

Well, I'm a little short on the hope. But, I'd really like to be able to have a DX/FX combo like the d300/d700 again. I really enjoyed using that pair for several years. Now, it would be awesome to pair a DX camera to my d800, with like body/features/controls. I might even pick up a d810 to go with it.

But, I've said similar things, many times in the past. Certainly not holding my breath. I'll believe it when I see it.

IQ is great. Leaps ahead of the D300. Focus is, well...I'm still getting used to it and water polo is a very tough shoot. One thing that is driving me nuts is while it has a meter you can see through the viewfinder, I can't seem to get it to work unless I am in manual mode and I like to see it all the time. It's there, just does't light up all the time. Body is sturdy, but the grip is a little small for me. I'm off on a landscape workshop with Michael Fry in the Eastern Sierras and expect the IQ to really shine.

For me it's about $900 (refurb 7100)

Be careful with your refurb purchases. I was all ready to buy from B&H, but then read some more and discovered 2 things. First, B&H does not guarantee it is a Nikon USA product so it could be gray and it only comes with Nikon's 90 day warranty. Cameta sells Nikon USA identified refurbs and provide a 1 year warranty.
